Young carers enjoy weekend of respite at Fairthorne Manor

14th August 2019

A group of young Southampton carers escaped the city for a weekend of respite last month thanks to The children’s Society and YMCA Fairthorne Manor’s Young Carer’s Festival.

The 13 young people, who are supported by our Young Carers in Southampton project, met with hundreds of other likeminded young carers from across the country to have fun, relax, socialise and have their voices heard about issues that affect their lives.

The 11-16 year olds enjoyed a range of activities during the festival, including; kayaking, paddle boarding, zip wiring, abseiling, samba drumming, arts and crafts, a silent disco and well-being workshops.

Jo Payne, Project Worker at No Limits, said “Young Carers Festival was fabulous! Our young carers had the opportunity to make new friends with young people from across the country and enjoy activities they had never done before. The silent disco and fairground rides were a big hit, but mostly, the young people enjoyed the freedom from their caring roles and threw themselves into just being young people with full gusto!”
