DASH Sailing Trip Log

29th May 2026

After five days and a mix of sunshine and rain, the DASH sailing trip was a real success!

Beginning in Hamble Marina, we sailed from Yarmouth to Poole, then on to Weymouth, finishing on a bright, sunny day in Cowes. Seven young people, four staff, and five Rona volunteers took part. While many of the young people began the trip as strangers, by the final evening they were skimming stones together and laughing about everything they’d achieved.

Day One
We got straight into sailing, learning the basics of tacking after being split into two mixed watches of young people and staff. Everyone quickly got hands-on with sails and lines, building confidence from the outset. After a full day, we settled in for our first night at sea.

Day Two
The sea was a bit rougher, but everyone pulled together to get us to Poole, where we enjoyed an evening in the marina (and a full roast dinner made while on the water!). The determination and resilience shown by the young people was incredible; many surprised themselves with what they were capable of.

Day Three
With brighter skies and calmer seas, we spent the whole day sailing. By now, we were finding our feet on board and learning what all the sailing terms mean, like who doesn’t know the difference between a sail sheet and a line? Or a bowline from two half hitches?!

Day Four
After three days of grafting, we were rewarded with sunshine, cake, and sea shanties. Morale was high as we made for Cowes. Everyone pulled their weight, from cleaning and steering to cooking. We spent the evening exploring the town and reflecting on the brilliant few days we’d spent together. We finished the day with a curry and some perfectly timed sentimentality and reflection, followed by a lot of laughter.

Day Five
We said goodbye to Rona with a pancake breakfast, obviously! On our way back to Southampton, staff and young people had time to receive feedback from the captain, recognising their effort and progress. Impressively, everyone was invited back to take part in future sails. It was clear everyone had so much to be proud of.

Over the five days, the group showed real camaraderie, dedication, and resilience. Young people discovered strengths they didn’t know they had and formed friendships that may not have happened otherwise.

Thanks to the Rona Sailing Project and all the amazing young people who took part! Fingers crossed we can do it all again next year.
