Support for young people impacted by substance misuse

Young people can have their lives seriously affected by those around them misusing drugs and alcohol especially if it is a family member, friend or partner. This week the No Limits DASH team worked with fourteen young people aged 9 to 16 years old on a graffiti project, based at the YMCA Newtown Youth & Community Centre. The project was led by a young person who specialised in this art form. Support for the project came from Saints Connect and HeadStart programmes. This is part of a rolling summer programme of activities that has already involved drama sessions and gardening. These activities introduce the young people to a range of different activities as well as building up their self-esteem and giving them opportunities to speak to a worker about their issues.

The DASH service can give you information, advice, support and counselling and can offer a variety of treatments, including harm reduction and needle exchange. You can learn more about the substance you are using, their effects and risks and learn how to keep yourself safe if using drugs or alcohol. The DASH team can also link you up with all sorts of activities including therapeutic groups, sports, cooking etc. so you can get involved with positive and healthy activities to help you change your substance using habits.
